Undergraduate Major Introduction
1. Brief Introduction to the School of Mechanics and Engineering
There are 82 faculty members, including 26 professors, 19 associate professors, and 4 senior engineers. The proportion of full-time teachers with doctoral degrees is 88.3%, and the proportion of teachers with overseas experience is 68.3%
The school has a first-level master degree authorization point and a first-level doctoral degree authorization point in mechanics. At present, there are 776 students in the school, including 609 undergraduates, 167 postgraduates (including 1 international student), and 102 doctoral students. After more than 60 years of school-running practice, adhering to our school’s century-old tradition of "rigorous academic research and strict requirements", a national-level teaching team led by national-level teaching teachers is the main force, and national-level teaching resources are the guarantee. Simultaneously, relying on the platform of provincial and ministerial level, the characteristics and advantages of running a school centered on the learning and development of students has been formed, which focused on cultivating "strong foundation and emphasis on practice" interdisciplinary talents.
2. Professional Setting and Enrollment Plan
Engineering Mechanics, which was one of the earliest mechanics majors in China, was founded in 1958. And the mechanics discipline on which the Engineering Mechanics depends was approved in 1981 with the right to grant a doctorate degree in "Solid Mechanics". In 1988, a "Postdoctoral Station in Mechanics" was established. Then in 2005 the first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization in mechanics was obtained, and the national-level mechanics experimental teaching demonstration center was established in 2006. In 2007, it was selected as a brand major in Sichuan Province, subsequently as a national characteristic major in 2008, and as a pilot major in the Excellent Engineer Program of the Ministry of Education in 2011. In addition, the engineering mechanics teaching team was selected as the national teaching innovation team in 2010.
Top Mechanics Class (Engineering Mechanics for undergraduate major) was founded in 2019. And it adopts the talent training connected mode of undergraduate, master, and doctoral degree, which not only shortens the school system, but also guarantees the necessary basic mechanics knowledge, as well as learning and applying the latest applied mechanics results and experimental technical method. Moreover, this training mode focus on cultivating students' theoretical analysis ability and experimental skills in solving complex engineering and scientific problems related to mechanics. Furthermore, the "3+1+X" training model (Master X=2, direct PhD student X=4, Master PhD student X=5) is implemented, and the personalized training program that closely links the undergraduate, master, and doctor is formulated. Specifically, students should complete the undergraduate course of the "Top-notch Program" in the first three years, then complete the bridging talent training courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students and undergraduate graduation design (thesis) in the fourth year, finally obtain a bachelor's degree at the end of the four-year period. From the fifth year, students can obtain the postgraduate status, and can also study for the doctoral degree through two methods: master-doctor study and direct doctor study.
Engineering Mechanics Interdisciplinary Class founded in 2016, aims to cultivate inter-disciplinary talents with both mechanics foundation and professional knowledge related rail transit, and hence it can better support the development of our school's superior disciplines in rail transit .
Aircraft Design and Engineering: Founded in 2016, it belongs to the first-level discipline of Aeronautics and Astronautics. It is one of the new majors opened by Southwest Jiaotong University for the construction of the big traffic blueprint. And it also depends on the mechanics discipline, which was approved in 1981 with the right to grant a doctorate degree in "Solid Mechanics". Moreover, in 1988, a "Postdoctoral Station in Mechanics" was established. 3. Objectives
(1) Engineering Mechanics (Program code: 080102)
Cultivate senior engineering mechanics professionals with comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physique, aesthetics and labor, solid foundation of mathematics, mechanics and professional knowledge, strong ability to analyze and solve complex problems, and experimental skills. Serve the social and economic development of the country, especially in the west, and significantly support the development of rail transport related advantageous disciplines in our university.
The Graduates should have basic knowledge of science and technology to acquire basic practical application ability, possess solid knowledge of mathematics, mechanics, structural engineering and necessary engineering skills; Possess the professional knowledge of engineering mechanics to acquire the professional ability of engineering mechanics; Have the ability to solve complex mechanical problems by means of experiment, modeling and simulation; Have the basic ability to analyze the engineering structure by using computer and modern experimental technology; Possess good communication, organization and coordination ability and certain project management ability; Possess a certain degree of humanistic literacy, understand the environment and sustainable development; Possess the basic professional qualities of scientific and technological workers to acquire the ability to independently acquire new knowledge and carry out innovative work. Graduates should have a wide range of knowledge, good abilities of mechanical modeling and theoretical analysis, and a certain degree of innovative spirit and practical ability. After graduation, they are competent for engineering design and calculation, experimental research, software development and technical management related to mechanical problems, and become high-quality inter-disciplinary talents who can work in mechanics, rail transportation, civil engineering, machinery and other fields, graduates become backbones of employment units five years after graduation.

Cultivate the top talents of mechanics who love the motherland, love basic science, have solid basic theory, outstanding potential, innovative consciousness and innovation ability, meet the major strategic needs of the country, lead the development of disciplines, and promote the development and progress of mechanics and related disciplines.
Through triage training, undergraduates should have a wide range of knowledge, a good mechanical modeling and theoretical analysis ability, and a certain degree of innovative spirit and practical ability. Master students should master solid basic theories and systematic specialized knowledge in the discipline of mechanics, and can engage in scientific research or independently undertake specialized technologies. Doctoral students should master solid and broad basic theories and systematic and in-depth specialized knowledge, can engage in scientific research independently, make creative achievements in science or special technology, and lead the development and progress of the discipline.

The major cultivates compound and innovative high-quality talents with the comprehensive development of moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetics and labor, and they should have a solid foundation of mathematics, mechanics and aircraft design, pneumatic design, structure and strength analysis, experimental technology and other professional knowledge, master basic theory knowledge of key system design and application of aircrafts, have basic abilities to engage in scientific research and engineering design of aircrafts, not only can continue their education in researches of aircraft design and engineering, but also can match the demand of related fields.
The graduates should master the basics of mathematics and mechanics, and master the basic theory and knowledge of aircraft design; Understand the theoretical frontier, application prospect and development trend of aircraft design; Master the analytical and experimental methods of aircraft design; Be familiar with relevant specifications and design manuals of aircraft design; Master English language, be able to read professional English materials, have certain listening and speaking ability and cross-cultural communication and cooperation ability.
